In Spain, pets are now considered by law as "living beings endowed with sensitivity" and not as things, and they are considered to be someone else in the family.

The law considers that "animals are living beings endowed with sensitivity" and that the owner must exercise his rights over him and his duties of care respecting that quality and ensuring "their welfare in accordance with the characteristics of each species".

The measures adopted by the judge in case of divorce, nullity or separation can also be judicially modified by "the needs of the companion animals".

Parents may not use animals to control or victimize women and children.

In addition, the law provides that companion animals are non-seizable in case of non-payment. Read more.
