The hospital demanded that the patient pay the bill for the medical services, as the insurance did not pay it.

The woman, who was 32 weeks pregnant, went to the gynaecologist and the doctor warned her of the possibility of premature birth, so she decided to go to the emergency department of a nearby private clinic. There she was admitted, after verbally informing the reception desk that she had health insurance. She underwent several tests, spent three nights in hospital and was finally discharged.

The Barcelona Provincial Court has ruled that the woman will have to pay for the private medical care provided as an emergency because of the risk of premature birth. However, she did not have to pay for the subsequent medical expenses, as the hospital should have informed her in advance of the financial conditions of the service. Read more.
