This is a case of force majeure, since the closure of the airport or the cancellation of flights due to adverse weather conditions are circumstances beyond the control of the airlines.
Thus, travellers affected by the storm have the right to claim the reimbursement of the cancelled flights, but they are not entitled to any kind of compensation for the cancellation.
The airlines are obliged to reimburse the price of the ticket or to provide alternative transport, although the latter in the circumstances generated by the Filomena storm was really complicated, as land traffic (road and rail) was also seriously affected by the storm.
Similarly, airlines are obliged to provide assistance to their passengers, food and drink, and to facilitate communication by telephone or similar means.
