The Court of First Instance and Preliminary Investigation 2 of Fuerteventura sentenced a person as the criminally responsible author of a crime of animal abuse, recognising the "panic attacks" and "chronic stress" that the accused caused to an 8 month old pit bull dog.
The novelty of this sentence is that it contemplates the psychological injuries suffered by the animal when it was mistreated.
"We went to the trial with 3 reports by 4 experts", explains Maite Bautista in relation to the present sentence for the dog. She assures that it was decisive during the trial to show the video of an aggression suffered by the dog. "The judge was horrified, even the defendant's lawyer was horrified", says Bautista, who affirms that "if the video had not been shown, the judge would not have been so forceful".
In this regard, as stated in the sentence, the convicted person kept the dog, named Blue, without a chip, in the backyard of his home, "chained, without water and without shelter from the high temperatures". He proceeded "on repeated occasions" to hit the animal on the head and body "with fists and kicks, all while the dog was chained and with no possibility of escape, causing it, in addition to the inevitable pain as a result of the repeated blows, panic attacks and chronic stress".
