This is the aim of the new Traffic Law 18/2021 of 20 December, which comes into force today, Monday 21 March, in Spain and whose main objective is to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
These are some of the penalties:
- More points will be deducted from driving licences, 6 points (previously 3 points) for using, holding in hand, mobile phone devices while driving.
- 4 points will be deducted (previously 3) for not using, or not using correctly, seat belts, child restraint systems, helmets and other mandatory protective equipment.
- The possibility for cars and motorbikes to exceed the speed limits by 20 km/h on conventional roads when overtaking other vehicles is removed.
- Underage drivers driving any vehicle may not drive with a blood or breath alcohol level above 0.0. This offence remains unchanged and is still classified as a very serious offence: a fine of 500 euros.
- On roads with more than one lane in each direction, it is compulsory to change lanes completely when overtaking cyclists or mopeds. In addition, the number of points is increased from 4 to 6 when overtaking cyclists without leaving the obligatory minimum separation of 1.5m. It is also forbidden to stop or park on cycle lanes or cycle paths. Read more.
