The Spanish Supreme Court has convicted the owners of a nightclub and a hotel for an offence against workers' rights.

In May 2017, the Guardia Civil and the Provincial Labour Inspectorate went to the nightclub in Heras (Cantabria), which was operated by a hotel.

There were 25 people there, 21 of whom were not legally registered and seven did not have a permit to work in Spain.

The judgment distinguishes between the activity of "alterne" and that of prostitution. It says that this is an employment relationship, as services are provided for hire or reward, payment is made and a certain number of hours are worked. Therefore, the workers must be legally registered, even if they work as prostitutes. Read more.
